Brown Suede Shoes
Suede runners, and especially brown suede runners are everywhere right now. Part of me hates posting about trends because I feel like I’m feeding into the buying frenzy, but we do need to buy new things every once in a while so if this speaks to you - go for it!
Cara Carosielli - Social Media, Motherhood and her Fave Things
Cara Carosielli is an entrepreneur, social media manager, and mother. She’s also a born and raised Montrealer and has lived all over, both on and off the Island. She took a little bit of time out of her busy life to let us know what’s going on with her and how she got started in the world of social media management.

Can you let us know exactly what a social media manager is and what they do? I see that term being used but I’m not totally sure what a social media manager does, or does everyone approach the role differently? Is there any sort of certification?
Really simply put, my team and I research, plan, create, schedule and analyze your social media content for you in order to reach the right audience. This way, you as a business owner can focus on what you do best—run your biz!
The role has really evolved over the last five years, especially with the rise of short form video content.
I wouldn’t say you *need* a certification or diploma—but having one can definitely increase your credibility and give you a better understanding of fundamental marketing concepts.
Being a social media manager is more than scrolling Instagram all day or just *hitting post*.
We are always up to date with platform updates, features and best practices. We dive deep for a better understanding of your target audience’s behaviours, interests and struggles. Analyzing and interpreting data is something we are always doing to assess and target our client’s audiences so we can adjust and develop our approach.
You grew up dancing competitively and your mom owned a dance studio. This is also how you started in the world of social media. Can you let us know how that happened?
In 2008, my mom founded a dance studio that I later took over in 2016, at a time when businesses were starting to use social media and incorporate it into their marketing strategies. This is something I started exploring on Instagram. I was always creating posts and stories (there were no Reels back then!) to promote our business. We always got a lot of compliments about our online presence and it was always a part of running the business that I really enjoyed.
If I were to start a brand new social media account tomorrow, can you give me 3 tips on how to set myself up for success?
If we’re talking about Instagram, which is the platform I mainly specialize in, I would recommend doing a little research into the keywords your audience might be looking for and optimizing your Instagram bio with those words. Instagram is moving more and more toward a search-based platform, which means any word you search for, you will find content for that word.
Make sure you have a clear profile picture, let people know who you are, what you do, how you do it and where people can contact/connect with you.
Before you start posting, you want to plan out what your goals are with social media (what are you looking to get from it) and a content plan (what are you planning to post to reach those goals?) With your first few posts, you’ll want to make them about you/your brand story, your offers, what it’s like working with you and any kind of social proof (if it’s a case study, even better!)
Lastly, it is social media after all, so be social—interact and follow accounts that you enjoy, that could potentially be your target clients and answer messages and comments that come in.
So in sum: research, have a plan, be social!
Is there any way to use social media more efficiently? I feel like I always get distracted and the next thing I know I’m watching a rescue cat in the Philippines.
There are definitely ways to use social media more intentionally, especially if you only want to use it for your business— follow accounts you truly enjoy interacting with, engage with content you like (this includes how long you spend watching something), respond to comments and DMs you receive, don’t scroll the reels tab if you know you’ll get stuck in a scroll hole, and set time limits in your app settings on your phone to reduce screen time.
I know, easier said than done! But once we change our mindset around social media and see it as a tool for our business, the way we use it becomes more purposeful.
You are a mom! Congratulations! Do you have any places you like to take your son?
Thank you!! My son is full of energy and loves to move, and climb. He’s also very curious and loves color and lights. We recently went to Disney on Ice together and he loved every second of it.
Here are some of the places we’ve been to together in and around Montreal:
Pi-O Amusement (Longueuil) - Indoor amusement park, as of 18 months
Quinn Farm in the Fall (love that this was a one-stop shop for apples + pumpkins + sunflowers)
Parc Safari in the summer
Maison Lavande in the summer
Sensetionel - Indoor Multisensory playground
What was the best piece of advice you were given about motherhood?
It’s less advice and something I had to accept early on, as someone who continued running my business through pregnancy and post-partum: no day will go as planned, instead of fighting it, embrace it. My favorite part of motherhood is watching my son discover the world for the first time—it’s pure magic. Every little milestone, every new word, every moment of wonder feels like the biggest, most rewarding privilege, and there’s no greater pride or joy than being his mom.
You also have a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. They seem like such loving dogs. Do you have any cute dog gear that you’ve been loving lately?
Yes! Henry is the most cuddly, clingy boy. I can’t wait for him and my son to be besties. My go-to gear for him (especially as a new mom juggling a stroller and a leash) is my hands-free leash and dog walking bag from Cavology. The founder, Mai, is a longtime friend of mine, boy mom and a cav mom of two!
You are such a busy lady! What do you like to do in your down time?
-Playing with Roman, of course and spending time with family
-I love watching movies and tv shows; currently watching Severance on AppleTV.
-Scrolling through real-estate properties on Centris
-Coffee chats with like-minded Montreal business women
-Discovering new Montreal restaurants
My Neighbourhood
I can’t wait to discover more in my new neighbourhood, Rosemont.
A couple of faves:
Parc Molson (in the winter there is a skating rink, and I can’t wait to bring Roman!)
Le Elsdale (cute little spot right near my house for lunch or drinks, delicious food!)

Listen Up! Podcast Recommends
Laundry folding has not been the same since podcasts were invented, and I for one am so thankful. I also listen to podcasts while editing, driving, running, walking and cooking. I listen to a lot of podcasts. Here are some of my favourites, and some reader recommended. If you have a fave I don’t know about hit me up!
Comedy
Smartless - I mean if you haven’t listened to this podcast, do you even fold laundry? There are so may stand outs, and the first few episodes are the best. Maya Rudolph, Matt Damon, George Clooney (!!), Bradley Cooper (OMG), Hugh Grant (way better than I was expecting), Tina Fey… the list goes on. They are all hilarious in their own way.
The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast - I love listening to friends talk, and especially old, funny friends who joke with each other. I look forward every week.
Good Hang with Amy Poehler - This new podcast looks promising, and also who doesn’t love Amy?
Office Ladies - Again - love the banter between two old friends. Start at the beginning and fall in love with The Office all over again.
Say More with Dr? Sheila - A hilarious mostly improvised podcast with Amy Poehler and other comedy legends.
For the Kiddos - Make a long car ride tolerable
Greeking Out - My son is obsessed with this episode and now we are all experts on Greek Myths. This one and the one below were recommended to me by my friend Amanda Eaman.
Wow in the World - The format has changed over the years and we prefer the longer ones near the beginning - Exploding Ants and Static Man are particular faves (but there are a lot of good ones)
Other Interests
Song Exploder - Listen to how your favourite songs were created. I just listened to the Severance episode and found it fascinating.
Armchair Expert - Another classic podcast. Pick and choose your episodes - they are long!
Women Who Travel - An inspirational podcast about travel by women for women but around all sorts of different topics.
Superwomen with Rebecca Minkoff - A fab inspiration business podcast. I’ve gleamed a lot from this podcast and Rebecca is very honest and easy to listen to.
